To find the length of a string

Filed under: Linux Tips & Tricks — Kunal Jain @ 08:36

One method of finding the length of the string is by using “expr”.
For example

# expr length "this word"
Output:
9

Other method for finding the length of the string is

# var="this word"
# echo ${#var}
Output:
9
